Why Ann Arbor BJJ

A GYM YOU
CAN TRUST.

Most of our members started with zero experience. Every class is scaled to the person in it.

Our goal is to build problem solvers. You train live from day one, at your level, with a coach watching the room. Beginners get a safe, honest start; experienced grapplers get pushed. Everyone trains on the same mat. You will fail at things along the way — that's how problem solvers get built.

  • BB

    Black belt under Margot Ciccarelli

Head Coach Royce Miller has 17 years on the mat, with his black belt awarded in 2023 by Margot Ciccarelli in Japan. He teaches the adult curriculum and the 8–12 kids class.

  • ECE

A degree in early childhood education

Royce holds a degree in early childhood education and designs and oversees every kids class, including the new 4–7 program. Expectations are clear, progressions fit the age, and parents can relax.

  • 7

Open seven days a week. Open to all levels.

6:00 AM, noon, evening, and weekends. Whatever your week looks like, there's a class that fits it. We scale the difficulty to push experienced grapplers and help people from day one learn to grapple.

  • M2M

    Month-to-month. No contracts.

Your first month is $49, then $149/month for adults & teens, $125 for kids 8–12, $100 for little kids 4–7. Cancel with an email. If this is the right gym for you, we'd rather earn that every month.

  • P

Easy to get to. Easy to park.

Two blocks from campus on E Liberty and an easy walk from anywhere downtown. Free street parking mornings and evenings, and a free structure nearby in the evening.

How We Coach

WE MEET YOU
AT YOUR LEVEL.

Jiu-jitsu is problem-solving under pressure. So that's how we teach it — live, and scaled to you.

Every class is built around a live problem — a starting position, a goal, and rules — and you solve it against a partner who's trying to win. The coach shapes the problem to fit you: tighter rules and a patient partner on day one, a harder problem and a tougher partner as you grow. The solution you find is yours, which is why it holds up when it matters. Coaches who follow the research call this the Constraints-Led Approach (CLA).

  • LIVE FROM DAY ONE

Real resistance from your first class. The task, the partner, and the pace are scaled so it's safe and productive whether you're on day one or 10+ years on the mat.

  • GAMES THAT TEACH

Classes are organized around problems to solve, so you build a real understanding of positions and how to move through them.

  • YOUR GAME, NOT A COPY

Everyone in the room gets the same problem — the position, the goal, the rules. Nobody solves it the same way. Your body, your build, and your background shape the answer, and that's the one we coach.

Head Coach

ROYCE MILLER.

Black belt under Margot Ciccarelli. On the mat since 2010. Teaching the adult curriculum and the 8–12 kids class.

Royce started training in 2010 and moved to Florida in 2012 to train at American Top Team under Ricardo Libório, earning his blue belt there. Purple and brown came under Kevin and Brian Mahecha. In 2020 he began mentoring under Margot Ciccarelli, who awarded his black belt in Japan in July 2023.

He also holds a degree in early childhood education, which shapes how every kids class here is built — structured, patient, and designed for how kids actually learn.

Questions

BEFORE YOU
WALK IN.

The six things almost everyone asks first.

All questions & contact
No. Most of our members started with no martial arts or grappling background. Every task is scaled to the person doing it, so your first class is live but safe.
Your first month is $49. After that it's $149/month for adults & teens, $125 for kids 8–12, and $100 for little kids 4–7, month-to-month with no contract. Cancel with an email.
Easier than you'd think. Street parking is free mornings and evenings, the Thompson structure (508 Thompson St) is free after 6:00 PM, and Liberty Square is the closest paid structure. Parking details — or text us and we'll point you.
We're a no-gi gym. For your first class, a t-shirt or rash guard with athletic shorts or sweatpants — nothing with zippers, pockets, or hard buttons.
Ages 4–7 train Tuesday and Thursday at 6:00 PM; ages 8–12 train Monday through Thursday at 5:45 PM. Age groups are a starting point, not a wall — a capable 7-year-old can move up and a 13-year-old can stay in kids if we think it's the safer fit, both with coach approval.
Yes. We serve all of Washtenaw County, and we're a short drive from Ypsilanti, Saline, Dexter, and Chelsea. With classes morning, noon, and evening seven days a week, there's a slot that fits the commute, and parking is easy once you're here.
Compete

WANT TO TEST IT?

Competition is optional. For members who want it, we run a comp team and travel to tournaments together — ADCC opens, UFC BJJ, IBJJF, and local Detroit events.
